What Is Crimson Desert?
Crimson Desert is an open-world action RPG developed by Pearl Abyss (the studio behind Black Desert Online). It launched on March 19, 2026 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, selling 2 million copies in its first 24 hours with a Steam peak of 240,000 concurrent players.
You play as Kliff, the leader of a mercenary group navigating a war-torn world. The game blends Souls-like boss encounters with open-world exploration, camp management, and a multi-character system where you eventually control three playable characters.
Combat System Basics
Crimson Desert's combat is its defining feature — and also its steepest learning curve. Here is what you need to know.
Core Controls
| Action | PC (Default) | Controller | |--------|-------------|-----------| | Light Attack | Left Click | RB | | Heavy Attack | Right Click | RT | | Block / Parry | Hold Q | LB | | Dodge Roll | Space | B | | Sprint | Shift (tap repeatedly) | Left Stick Click | | Palm Force | Special Key | RB + RT | | Interact | E | A |
Important note on PC controls: The keyboard and mouse controls received significant criticism at launch. Pearl Abyss has publicly apologized and promised a patch. The Sprint key requiring repeated tapping is a known pain point. Consider using a controller for a smoother experience until the PC controls are patched.
Combat Fundamentals
- Blocking reduces damage but costs stamina. You cannot block forever. Heavy attacks from bosses will drain your stamina bar rapidly.
- Parrying requires precise timing. Press block just before an attack connects to parry. Successful parries stagger the enemy and open a damage window. This is essential for boss fights.
- Dodge roll has invincibility frames. The brief window of invulnerability during your roll is your primary defensive tool against unblockable attacks.
- Palm Force is your stagger move. It deals moderate damage but high stagger. Use it to break boss super armor and interrupt wind-up attacks.
- Heavy attacks break guards. When enemies (or other players) block, use heavy attacks to break through their defense.
Stamina Management
Stamina governs blocking, dodging, sprinting, and some attacks. Running out of stamina in a boss fight is the number one cause of death for new players.
- Do not hold block continuously. Tap-block or parry instead.
- Limit dodge spam. Each dodge costs stamina. Two rolls to reposition is fine; five panic rolls leaves you empty.
- Upgrade stamina early. The stat investment screen lets you boost max stamina. Put 4-5 points into it before tackling Chapter 2 bosses.
Three Playable Characters
Crimson Desert features three playable characters, each with distinct combat styles:
| Character | Unlocked | Weapons | Playstyle | |-----------|---------|---------|-----------| | Kliff | Game Start | Sword & Shield, Longsword, Dual Swords | All-rounder. Required for most main story content and Abyss exploration. | | Damiane | Mid-game | Rapier + Pistol, Dual Rapiers | Fast, agile assassin. Excels at hit-and-run and ranged poke. | | Oongka | Chapter 7 (after defeating Myurdin) | Giant Axe, Orc Cannon | Slow, devastating bruiser with super armor. Highest damage per hit. |
Key design point: HP, Stamina, and Soul values are shared across all three characters. However, weapon skills and Abyss Artifact upgrades are character-specific. You need to invest in each character's skill tree independently.
Early Game Progression (Chapters 1-4)
Chapter 1: Learning the Ropes
- Complete the tutorial combat sequences. Pay attention to parry timing.
- Explore the starting area for chests and collectibles.
- Talk to every NPC — some offer side quests with valuable early rewards.
- Upgrade stamina and HP to 4-5 before moving on.
Chapter 2: Reed Devil (First Major Boss)
The Reed Devil is the first serious challenge. Many players hit a wall here.
Preparation:
- Make sure Stamina and HP are at level 4-5
- Stock up on food (healing items) — bring twice what you think you need
- Equip Sword & Shield (the shield's block is more stamina-efficient than two-handed weapons)
Strategy:
- Phase 1: Learn his attack patterns. Block light attacks, dodge heavy ones. Parry when comfortable.
- Phase 2: You must destroy totems. Use Heavy Attack or Palm Force on them (light attacks are too slow).
- Phase 3: He becomes aggressive. Focus purely on dodging and punishing small windows.
Chapter 3-4: Kearush the Slayer
Kearush is widely considered one of the hardest bosses in the entire game. He has three full health bars and his attacks cannot be parried.
Critical preparation:
- Buy the Canta Helm from the merchant Rhett. It has a "Nullifies Roar" trait that completely blocks Kearush's main stun attack. This single item makes the fight dramatically easier.
- Use fire-enchanted weapons to trigger burning (he rolls when burning, creating attack windows)
- Learn the Back Hang skill — attacking from behind deals massive damage
- Dodge is your only defense. Blocking does not work against Kearush.
Camp Building (Mercenary Hub)
Your camp is not a free-build sandbox — it is a pre-set hub where you upgrade facilities to unlock gameplay benefits.
Upgrade Priority Order
- Blacksmith Forge Level 2 (top priority) — Unlocks third-tier weapon upgrades. Without this, you will hit a damage wall in Akapen.
- Apothecary Tent — Increases max healing item capacity and gives passive poison resistance.
- Mercenary Barracks — Lets you recruit higher-quality NPCs and unlock passive resource gathering missions.
Camp Resources
Building upgrades require wood, iron ore, and rare monster materials. The resource grind is real — community consensus is that it requires "painfully large amounts." Tips:
- Always keep dispatch missions running (passive resource income)
- Complete commission quests for inventory expansion rewards
- Never let your food supplies run dry — food buffs are free power
Key Mechanics to Understand Early
Abyss Artifacts
Hidden throughout the world, Abyss Artifacts provide permanent stat boosts. Only Kliff can explore Abyss locations. Look for glowing purple rifts in the overworld.
Soul Value
Soul is a shared resource across characters used for special abilities and interactions. It builds during combat and exploration. Do not waste it on minor abilities early — save it for boss encounters.
Cross-Platform and Saves
Crimson Desert supports cross-play between PC, PS5, and Xbox. Your save is tied to your platform account. There is no cross-save between different platforms at launch.
ATAG Mech System (Chapter 10)
You will eventually unlock the ATAG mech suit in Chapter 10 (approximately 50-60 hours in). It is the game's most powerful combat tool, featuring a machine gun, explosive cannon, EMP, and charge attack. Do not worry about it early — just know it exists and is worth the wait.
Essential Early Game Tips
- Use a controller if possible. The PC keyboard controls have known issues. Pearl Abyss is working on a fix.
- Upgrade the Blacksmith first. Weapon damage is the single biggest factor in clearing content.
- Always carry more food than you think you need. Boss fights are long. Running out of healing mid-fight wastes all your progress.
- Talk to merchants in every town. Some sell unique items (like the Canta Helm) that are not available anywhere else.
- Do not ignore side quests. They reward materials, XP, and sometimes unique equipment.
- Learn to parry, not just block. Parrying is stamina-neutral and creates damage windows. Blocking drains stamina and only delays damage.
- Save before boss fights. Manual saves prevent losing progress on failed attempts.
- Explore everything. Sealed Abyss Artifacts, fast travel points, and hidden chests are scattered throughout every region.
Performance Tips
PC
- Minimum specs are demanding. Lower shadows and volumetric fog first for the biggest FPS gains.
- Enable DLSS/FSR if available on your GPU.
PS5
- The default settings are not optimized. Manually enable Performance Mode for smoother frame rates.
- Button rebinding is not available on console at launch — this is a known issue.
Common Beginner Mistakes
- Rushing past the Reed Devil unprepared. Level up stamina and HP first. Stock healing items.
- Ignoring the Canta Helm before Kearush. This single item trivializes his most dangerous attack.
- Spreading upgrades across all three characters. Focus on Kliff first since he is required for most content.
- Not upgrading the Blacksmith. Weapon damage scaling is exponential — each tier is a massive power spike.
- Trying to block Kearush's attacks. They are unblockable. Dodge only.
